To complete your visit to the Chillingham Wild Cattle, you must see Chillingham Castle.
Chillingham Castle is separate from the Wild Cattle Park, but it shares the romantic history of the herd. If you want to understand what life was like in this wild frontier region in centuries gone by, a visit to the Castle is essential.

This engraving was made in approximately 1830 by Thomas Allom for a tourist guide book. The cattle no longer have access to this particular pasture and the bulls are of course not hunted any more. Around the Castle there are now many tall conifer trees, planted in Victorian times. Otherwise the scene, with Cheviot in the far distance has hardly changed at all.
After a long period of decay and neglect, Chillingham Castle and its beautiful gardens now live again.
